A: The International Coaching Federation defines coaching as “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximise their personal and professional potential”.
John Whitmore, who is often credited as one of the founding thinkers in coaching said coaching was about, “unlocking a person’s potential to maximise their own performance. It is helping them to learn rather than teaching them.”
However, coaching is defined the essence of it is, that it is a collaborative, non-directive partnership between a coach and a client. A process that helps clients identify and work towards their goals.
The coaching process involves the coach asking powerful questions, listening, challenging, and supporting clients through the process.
A coach should provide their clients with a safe, confidential, non-judgemental space. They can also provide accountability, and encouragement, and can often be found cheering you on.
A: Coaching is not counselling, consulting, mentoring, or training. Coaching is a partnership and all the answers come from the client not the coach.
A: Clients often describe it as being energising, emotional, empowering, enlightening, exhausting, fascinating, powerful, life changing, worthwhile, interesting, and fun. Many say they just wish they had done it sooner.
A: Coaching is for you if you are, committed to the process, invested in wanting to change, and are willing to put in the time and the effort.
